Senator Whitmer would like to see the House and the Senate conduct hearings on how the State of Michigan can deal with such problems. She has been following several high profile Michigan cases and the AP/MTV poll that found 50 percent of 14- to 24-year-olds had experienced some form of cyber abuse, and 30 percent had either sent or received nude photos on their cell phones or online. One of the things she would like include in the bills that come out of these hearings is educating teens about cyber abuse. "We need to put laws on the books that are appropriate, not to make felons out of kids but to protect people," said Whitmer, the lead Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Education Committee. "The hearings are to start the dialog and figure out what kinds of penalties should be in place."
