Who is the Best Internet Lawyer To Hire For Your Business?

The "Best Internet Lawyer" for your Internet law issue is the one who will help your business grow and is willing to listen to your issues without charging you an hourly fee.  The "best" attorney is the one who will provide the greatest ROI for you or your business over the long term.  There are certainly options.  You can hire your regular lawyer with whom you already have a relationship, even though they may not have experience in internet law or a high level understanding of internet technology.  You can hire an attorney who specializes in 'Internet Law,' although you don't know that lawyer personally or have experience with his/her law firm.

Here are some criteria to help you decide:

  • Choose a lawyer who is willing to invest time in your business and issues: If your lawyer is going to charge you a fee every time you pick up the phone to see if you have a problem, then you probably won't call near as often as you should. Choose a lawyer who will listen to your issue, and tell you without charge whether it makes sense to start a project and will tell exactly how much it will cost.
  • Choose a law firm that has policies which support your business: Every lawyer has to answer to the established policies of the law firm.  Make sure the law firm has policies on billing, transparency and customer service which you can live with.
  • Choose an Internet Law Attorney for Internet Law Issues:  For issues involving technology and the Internet, you need an attorney and law firm which specializes in internet and technology cases. It always pays to hire a specialist when there is one available and meets the other criteria in this list. An Internet lawyer has probably dealt with clients like you on issues like yours.  If so, he/she will know what to do and how to do it.
  • Make Sure Your Personality is Compatible with Your Attorney: Working with a Lawyer may not quite be like getting married, but it is often more than hiring a key employee.  Finding someone you can work with, who understands you and your business is perhaps the most important criteria of all. A good internet law attorney not only has experience handling your specific issue, but works well with your personality and the culture of your business.

It makes sense to get it right the first time.  Make sure you carefully choose the law firm which will protect your business on the internet. If you pick the right one, you will see positive ROI and a partner who will help your business grow.
