Kentucky Car-Truck Accident Kills 11, Deadliest Kentucky Auto Accident in Years

KentuckyCarCrashThe Kentucky car-truck wreck happened between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. at mile marker 63 on Interstate 65, roughly 40 miles northwest of Bowling Green near Mammoth Cave National Park, in Hart County. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the Friday crash.

The van was carrying men, women and children heading south on I-65 when the driver apparently either fell asleep or had a medical emergency and crossed the median colliding with the van head-on near Munfordville, about 75 miles south of Louisville.

Officials at the scene say that an infant was among the dead, and that two children, ages four and five, were in the back of the van in car seats and survived the crash with minor injuries. The van was carrying a family of Mennonites from Burkesville who were traveling to Iowa to attend a wedding. The passengers in the van were all Mennonites traveling to a wedding in Iowa, according to Pastor Leroy Kauffman with the Marrowbone Christian Brotherhood in Burkesville. Nine of the passengers were congregants in Kauffman's church. For more information, view these results for "Kentucky car accident 65."

The truck hit a rock wall and burst into flames. The truck driver, who was from Alabama and had been traveling from Michigan, was killed transporting automobile wheel castings.  The area of the accident narrows from three lanes to two for motorists going south into Hart County, making it dangerous and a frequent spot for accidents.
